DMC is reinforcing its commitment to student success by providing a broad range of resources and services for pregnant and parenting students. Through support initiatives, advocacy, and legal protections, the college aims to help student-parents balance academics and family responsibilities.

Assistant Dean of Student Engagement and Retention Sara J. King said DMC offers access to a variety of financial support.

“There are several financial resources and support programs that are especially relevant for students who are parents, including grants & scholarships, on-campus childcare scholarships, payment plans, and emergency aid support,” said King.

Del Mar offers on-campus childcare and scholarships, basic needs assistance through Vikings Care, and academic accommodations for pregnant students. Additional services include counseling, advocacy, academic support, and campus events focused on community-building. A full list of services is available at www.delmar.edu/studentparents and www.delmar.edu/vikingscare.

Many services—such as the Center for Early Learning and Vikings Care—are available to both students and staff. Student-only services include Valdar’s Market and academic accommodations.

Pregnant and parenting students are protected under Title IX and Texas Education Code 51.982. These laws ensure students can request reasonable accommodations, such as excused absences, deadline extensions, and access to class materials. Del Mar’s Pregnant & Parenting Student Liaison and the Deputy Title IX Coordinator oversee compliance and support.

Students who believe their rights have been violated can contact Dean Rita Hernandez, Deputy Title IX Coordinator for Students, or Sara J. King, the Pregnant & Parenting Student Liaison. Evidence required for complaints is determined individually.

The college uses orientation sessions, advising, websites, and campus communications to ensure students are aware of available support. Faculty and staff also receive training to assist parenting students effectively.

“Student feedback has been positive, with many appreciating the college’s efforts”, said King. “Common challenges include time management, financial strain, and feelings of isolation. Del Mar addresses these issues through flexible scheduling, financial aid, and community-building events”.

Del Mar plans to expand parenting support beyond September by making Viking Family Connection Day an annual event, increasing awareness of childcare services, and strengthening community partnerships. Long-term goals include improving retention, creating a family-friendly campus, and closing graduation gaps.

The college works with local organizations to support student-parents. A list of partners is available at www.delmar.edu/vikingscare.
