Walking into the bustling Harvin Center on Del Mar College’s Heritage Campus, a woman stands alone at a booth handing out flyers. The booth, a promotion for the paralegal studies program; the woman, a representative of the program.

Her appearance paints a more intriguing picture. The clean suit she wears suggests her legal field of study, but her indifference toward the chaos of students crowding her booth and talking to her all at once suggest her hustle, who she is as a person.

Rebecca Farias is a full-time DMC student, a paralegal studies major, small business owner, mom, primary church teacher, participant in various student clubs and a Spring 2023 Hall of Fame inductee.

As she carefully lays out her various roles throughout the Corpus Christi community, Farias acts unfazed, as if this is just normal life.

First on the list of roles are the two businesses Farias owns and manages on her own.

“I have Paint and Picnic, which is a service where we set up picnics and painting classes. Then I also do Becky Bakes, which is under Food Cottage Law, and we set up at pop-up markets,” Farias said. “We sell coffee, cookies, cakes, pies, cupcakes, birthday cakes, all sorts of stuff like that.”

According to her, these two businesses combine both her love for baking and art, while also giving her valuable networking skills.

Although, they don’t necessarily connect with her true dream, which is law.

“Ultimately what I plan on doing is I am continuing on to Texas A&M Kingsville after I graduate in December. I hope to get a degree in history and then continue on to law school, and eventually be a lawyer,” Farias said.

While taking full-time classes at Del Mar for paralegal studies, Farias also balances a law office internship on the side as well.

“On Mondays and Thursdays, I am in my internship from 8 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. After that I’ll go home and do homework until about 9,” she said.

On top of all this, Farias also shows her support for the community by volunteering for local organizations.

“I volunteer for the League of Women Voters and as far as clubs go, I’m in the Legal Professionals Association, Vocal Vikings, and I’m also a primary teacher at my local church,” Farias said.

While this workload may seem impossible, as Farias reassures herself, this is simply just how she lives.

“Some people have hobbies, I have clubs,” she said, “It’s just something I feel is a part of my personality, like I’ve always been the type of person to take on a lot of things at once and just kind of live me.”

As far as her small businesses go, she has an ultimate plan for that as well,

“I would really love to make Paint and Picnic into a 501C, which would be a charity accreditation and I would love to make it an entrepreneurship opportunity for people who have been in foster care or struggling,” Farias said.

“For Becky Bakes, I plan to always have that as a little weekend thing, the end goal is to have a food truck set up on Fridays and Saturdays.”
