Ask the career advisor: “What makes someone stand out on a résumé?”
—Chloe O., third-year student, Marquette University
To make yourself stand out on a résumé, tailor your document to the position you’re applying for. In other words, don’t use the same résumé or a generic copy for each job application. A standout résumé is not a recitation of everything you’ve ever done but instead a clear and specific highlight of your background in a way that relates to the position. Here are some tips to help you customize your résumé so that you look like the best candidate for the role.
Review the job description carefully
You can begin creating your tailored résumé by first taking the time to review the job description and research the company thoroughly. Take careful consideration in identifying what you bring to the role based on the qualifications and requirements of the job. Print the description and begin highlighting keywords that apply to you.
From here, find ways to incorporate these keywords into your résumé. For instance, if you’re applying for a software designer job and the job description mentions experience in Python or C++, you might add a bullet similar to the following: “Utilize coding languages such as Python and C++ to design reliable software platforms for client data management.” Remember, it’s OK if you don’t meet all the job requirements, but be sure to highlight what you do have.
Keep your résumé concise
Include only relevant information for the position on your résumé. Suppose you’re applying for a role as an editor. In that case, it makes more sense to include your campus newspaper editing experience rather than your experience working as a barista. Be sure that your document is also clean and consistent. Use an easily readable font and font size. Use the same font throughout your document and maintain consistent sizing for your headers and body text.
Include a summary of qualifications
Another way to stand out is to include a summary of qualifications at the top of your résumé to highlight your most relevant experiences, skills, or achievements. This section should include two to six bullet points of tailored information that applies to you and the specified role. Think of this section as the written equivalent of an “elevator pitch”—what would you tell an employer if you only had 30 seconds to market yourself?
Proofread, proofread, proofread
Lastly, always proofread your document. Have multiple individuals read over your résumé to ensure readability and consistency and to confirm how you’ve tailored the document for the specific role.
