DMC Stone Writing Center offered on and off campus
For almost 50 years, the Stone Writing Center has been providing one-on-one writing assistance to Del Mar College students, whether virtually or in-person.
The Stone Writing Center offers more than just English course essay help. Staff also assist with resume writing, application essays and even news writing.
Zakria Mohammad, a kinesiology major, said college courses differ greatly from high school courses, requiring more attention span and research.
“It was kind of scary at first. Whenever you sit down and your first essay gets handed to you, you’re like, ‘Oh man what do I do?’ and it’s difficult,” Mohammad said. “Once I came here, they helped me with everything. It was smooth.”
Margot Sorrell, an assistant writing instructor at the Stone Writing Center, said the center also offers help for those in computer science, biology and even nursing.
“It’s all disciplines. Chef class. And they’ll come in and they’ll say, ‘I just got this and I’m not sure where to start,’” Sorrell said, “So we’ll kind of walk them through that process and help them get started and set up and get off the ground. They’re welcome to come back as many times as they need to kind of work through the writing process.”
For students wanting to visit the Stone Writing Center in person, assistance can be provided at the Heritage Campus in the Solomon Coles Building, Room 116; the Windward Campus in Academic Learning Center in the Emerging Technology Building, Room A123; and the Oso Creek Campus in the Main Building in the library on the second floor.
The Stone Writing Center also offers 24/7 online tutoring to those taking online courses or those who prefer to receive assistance while at their own homes.
To access online tutoring, search the Stone Writing Center from the Del Mar College website. From there, there will be a link for online tutoring. The link will take you to Canvas where you can enroll it as a “course.”
Written drafts can be submitted through the most recent module on the Canvas page. From there, a professional writing tutor can read a student’s work online and send individual comments to help.
“We are very fortunate to continue offering our services to students,” Sorrell said. “They’re included. So anytime students want to come, we have hours.”
The center is open at the Heritage Campus from 9 a.m.- 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 10 a.m.- 3 p.m. Saturdays; and the Oso Creek Campus from 9 a.m.- 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday. For Windward Campus hours, contact that location at 361-698-1860.
For more information, contact the Heritage location at 361-698-1364 and the Oso Creek Campus at 361-698-2099. The center can also be contacted at swc@delmar.edu.

- Looking back on the deep history of Del MarWhen I arrived at Del Mar College in 1967 the new library had just been completed and thousands of books brought from the second floor of the History Building which had been housing them. Designers had the foresight to include two extra floors for future expansion. I was delighted to find all 130 volumes of the Official Records of the Civil War, an absolute must for Civil War research. When I was assigned a student typist, I knew what that meant: I was expected to publish. I had been told by Del Mar recruiter Grady St. Clair that four-year status…

My life and my goals for the future completely evolved into something I never would have guessed. And it all started with Foghorn News. When I first started taking classes at Del Mar, it was mostly because my mom kept telling me to. After having taken some time off, too much time in her opinion, my mom was convinced I would never get a degree if I didn’t do it now. To her, putting this off was only wasting time and…
