Pizza with the Del Mar President and other upcoming events are ways for students to make their college experience better, according to the Del Mar SGA.

New business covered at the second Student Government Association meeting was students’ chance to meet and eat with Del Mar College President and CEO Mark Escamilla, as well as voice any student concerns. This event also gives students the chance to meet with their SGA officers and members, sharing their thoughts and ideas or simply get a chance to know them better while dining on pizza. The Meet and Eat will be held Wednesday, Nov. 12 at the Oso Creek Campus Culinary building in the Tres Grese Room from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., with the time subject to change.

SGA Director Beverly Cage shared that she spoke with the Executive Director of Risk Management Jessica Alaniz, who oversees the cafeteria, about concerns of condiments being charged extra to students and meal costs increasing, with some prices as high as $12 for a meal. Cage stated it is a problem they are aware of, and currently working on, that the executive director is open to attending an SGA meeting if students want to address the issues with her directly.Another previous student grievance was library hours. The library recently announced an extension of their hours. The White Library on Heritage Campus will be open an hour longer on Monday through Thursday evenings, now closing at 9 p.m.

Other events announced during the meeting included the DMC-wide painting and decorating of a sugar skull in honor of Día de Los Muertos. The entries will be judged by students’ peers, and the best sugar skull will win a gift certificate. Students can pick up their sugar skull at any campus beginning Monday, Oct. 27 and return them at any campus for judging by the following Monday, Nov. 3. Additionally, the RSO Fall Carnival will be held at Windward Campus’s FEMA Dome, on Friday, Oct. 31, starting at 5 p.m.

The next SGA meeting will take place on Oso Creek Campus in the Student Leadership and Campus Life office, Wednesday, Nov. 19 at 12:30 p.m.
