Del Mar College’s Continuing Education program brings their “Beyond the Frame: A Exhibition of Digital Photography” to the public.
Twenty students from the DMC Continuing Education’s Digital Photography program will have their digital photographs displayed for the exhibition.
“I think these courses are important for our community as this is enrichment for all ages,” part-time photography instructor Edgar de la Garza said. “I’ve had students who are from 22 to all the way to 70 respectfully. It keeps our minds engaged with other fulfilling lines of work. You can’t be too busy or too late in your life to take on a new skill set. I think it’s fulfilling to teach different age groups because it helps me communicate what I know and I hope that it brings joy to those who intake that process,”
Photography student Gary Uhlenhaker says he enjoys taking the class.
“I enjoy it all, I mean, through the past three months I’ve probably took 5,000 photos, so it made me get out with my camera more. Over time you forget you have a camera,” explained Uhlenhaker. “It’s my hobby. I’m retired now, I like to take bird photos. I’m planning to shoot that bald eagle in Rockwell, the closest one I’ve found. I was there a couple years ago, took photos and the light wasn’t right and taking something a quarter mile away is very hard.”
The show will open with a free reception from 6-8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 2, in the lobby of Del Mar College’s Center for Economic Development. The exhibition will be on display through Tuesday, Dec. 17. The center is open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m. till noon Friday.
“This I’ll be my third time taking the advanced photography class,” photography student Patricia Bradshaw said “Each time I take it I learn something new. I get different insights from the other students, and I get to upgrade my skill because the more I practice, the more I learn.”
The two-week exhibition is free and open to the public and some photographs will be available for purchase.
