On July 17, Most Wanted Comics buzzed with excitement as David Longnecker, a DMC Math Assistant instructor, presented his cover artwork for the Witchblade comic book series. The signing event, which ran from 10:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., drew a diverse crowd eager to witness local talent in the spotlight.

Steven Fuentes, owner of Most Wanted Comics, spearheaded a cover art contest aimed at renowned publisher Image Comics. Despite initial resistance due to Longnecker’s lesser-known status, Fuentes persisted, successfully positioning Longnecker as the first Corpus Christi artist featured on a Witchblade cover, a prestigious achievement within the comic book community.

Both Longnecker and Fuentes acknowledged the challenges faced during the collaboration, attributing delays to occasional miscommunication. Longnecker reflected on the significance of this opportunity, highlighting Image Comics’ stature as a major player in the industry, just below giants like Marvel and DC.

Witchblade, originally introduced in 1995, has enjoyed adaptations across various media, including television, anime, manga, and novels. The release of a new Witchblade comic series in July 2024 marked a fresh chapter, featuring Longnecker’s artwork prominently on its debut cover, a milestone moment celebrated by attendees like DMC Fire Science major, Elijah Guerra.

Guerra, a regular at Most Wanted Comics, marveled at the community atmosphere, dubbing it an “artist corner” where creativity thrived. He praised Longnecker’s persistence over the three-month journey to secure his artwork on the coveted cover from Image Comics.

Lunchtime saw an influx of patrons seizing the opportunity to purchase new comics and receive personalized signings from Longnecker. Among them was local Oil Field worker, Oscar Ortiz, who proudly displayed his signed copy of Witchblade, emphasizing his support for Longnecker and Fuentes’ initiative.

Looking ahead, Most Wanted Comics plans to showcase Longnecker’s artwork at the upcoming Corpus Christi Comic Con, scheduled at the American Bank Center on July 26 and 28. This event promises another chance for fans and enthusiasts to engage with Longnecker’s creative vision and celebrate his breakthrough achievement in the comic book industry.

Most Wanted Comics is located at 4501 S. Alameda Corpus Christi, Tx 78412.
