Del Mar College has been recognized by the Texas Veterans Commission with the 2025 Gold Veterans Education Excellence Recognition Award, the highest level of distinction granted by the state for institutions demonstrating exceptional support for military-connected students.

At the heart of this achievement is Jennifer Armentrout, director of the Veteran Services Office and retired sergeant major in the Marine Corps, whose leadership has driven Del Mar College’s mission to serve those who have served.

“We are one of 33 two- and four-year colleges and universities in the state of Texas to receive this award and only one of 16 community colleges,” said Dr. Armentrout.

The award honors colleges and universities across Texas that go above and beyond to support veterans, active-duty service members, and their families in achieving academic and career success. The gold-level recognition signals a commitment not just to compliance, but to holistic, veteran-centered services, including dedicated advising, transition support, mental health resources, and career development.

Sergio San Miguel Sr., a current student at DMC, agrees this program has not only supported but valued him as a veteran during his college career.

“They’ve guided me through my benefits paperwork, answered all my questions and provided a place where I can connect with other veterans,” San Miguel said. “Their support has made starting college a lot less stressful and helped me feel more confident about this new chapter in my life.”

Armentrout, a 30-year Marine Corps veteran, has led the Veteran Services team in building an environment where service members feel seen, supported, and empowered to succeed beyond the uniform. Under her direction, Del Mar has implemented targeted programs to ease the transition to civilian and academic life, foster peer connection, and ensure access to education benefits and support.

“My staff is made up of veterans and military spouses who understand the transition from military student to college student and not only ensure that the move is smooth but that the students are well prepared for the leap into academic life,” said Armentrout.

This recognition places Del Mar among the top institutions in Texas for veteran services and further underscores the college’s commitment to being a veteran-ready campus, not just veteran-friendly.

“I believe that my own personal military service has given me the knowledge to assist students, and their families adapt to life after the military,”

Armentrout continued. “I’ve developed relationships with people and organizations all over the U.S. that can assist our students in all aspects of academic and personal life.”

The Texas Veterans Commission introduced the Veteran Education Excellence Recognition Award program to spotlight institutions that demonstrate measurable excellence in veteran education and support. The gold designation is the program’s highest honor.

“I just wanted to thank DMC Veterans Services office staff and everyone at DMC who supports veterans. College can be a big adjustment but having people who understand what you’re going through makes all the difference,” said San Miguel.
