DMC Students During Hurricane Harvey

What prompts two Del Mar College students to become bass boat heroes? Hurricane Harvey, an old flat-bottom boat and Viking spirit.Transfixed by the images coming out of Houston, Danielle Garza recounts the feeling that came over her: "As I watched what was happening in Houston I began to feel it in my heart that I had to help," she said.Danielle's husband, Ricardo Garza, a member of the Mathis Volunteer Fire Department, said, "Honestly, I wouldn't have gone without my wife. But I told her, ‘You know what? We can do it...let's go.’" Ricardo and Danielle hooked up their 14-foot bass boat and left Mathis for Cy-Fair, a Northwest Houston suburb, to begin evacuating people."When you're looking at it on social media it seems like it's easy to get around, but it's not,” Danielle said. “It took us five hours just to clear out one subdivision."Danielle is the incoming Student Government Association president as well as a biology major. Ricardo frequently volunteers at Del Mar College and is a business administration major. #vikingproudwednesday
