Thursday, February 15, 2024 11:00 AM – 12:01 PM
  • Description
Artist Talk with Sculptor Mark H. Cowardin
Juror of Del Mar College’s 58th Annual National Drawing and Small Sculpture Show

Every year, the Del Mar College Art Program’s National Drawing and Small Sculpture Show attracts artists from Texas and across the nation who submit their two- and three-dimensional work for consideration. And every year, a distinguished artist in his or her own right is asked to select the pieces that will make up the juried exhibition. Sculptor Mark H. Cowardin, an Associate Professor of Art with Johnson County Community College in Kansas, has served as juror for this year’s national show and will give an Artist Talk on Thursday, Feb. 15, at 11 a.m. in Richardson Performance Hall on the College’s Heritage Campus. He’ll cover his own artwork, perspectives and insights as an artist. Cowardin earned his Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Arizona as well as his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Kansas. As a native Midwesterner, his sculptural work centers on the complex relationship to natural resources that the country’s Midwest embodies. His work resides in many private and public collections, including the John Michael Kohler Art Center, Kohler Corporation, tNerman Museum of Contemporary Art and Rockhurst University. As juror of the College’s 58th Annual National Drawing and Small Sculpture Show, which opens with an evening reception on Feb. 16, Cowardin has selected 53 artworks out of the record 792 submissions, including 25 three-dimensional and 28 two-dimensional pieces representing 50 artists with four from Corpus Christi. The Feb. 15 Artist Talk as well as the Feb. 16 opening reception for the national show are both free and open to the public.
