The Stone Writing Center, located on the second floor of the White Library at Del Mar College’s Heritage Campus, provides free, individualized tutoring designed to strengthen and develop students’ writing skills. The center is open to all academic disciplines and assists students at every stage of the writing process.

To increase accessibility, the SWC offers both in-person and online services. On Heritage and Oso Creek campus, professional tutors are available on a walk-in basis to provide guidance in brainstorming, outlining, drafting, revising, and editing. Through the online platform, students may submit work 24 hours a day, seven days a week via Canvas. Tutors provide personalized written feedback intended to foster long-term improvement rather than offering only corrections.

Del Mar College sophomore Aleena Hernandez emphasized the value of the center. “The Writing Center really makes a difference for students,” Hernandez said. “The staff at the Stone Writing Center are amazing. They don’t just tell you what’s wrong with your paper—they explain it in a way that makes sense. They’re patient, supportive, and really want you to improve as a writer.”

Hernandez also highlighted the learning environment at Heritage. “The second floor of the library just has a good vibe. There’s always calming music playing, the seating is comfortable, and it feels like a space where you can actually focus. It doesn’t feel intimidating, it feels welcoming, which makes it easier to ask for help,” she said.

As writing is a fundamental component across all areas of study, the SWC has become an essential academic support service at Del Mar College. By prioritizing skill development and confidence-building, the center seeks to prepare students for continued success in both their coursework and professional endeavors.

The Heritage Stone Writing Center’s fall hours are Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Oso Creek SWC, located on the second floor of the library, is open Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Additional information is available by calling 361-698-1364 or 361-698-2099.
