2024 DMC Fall Commencement Keynote: Texas A&M University-Kingsville President Dr. Robert H. Vela
Texas A&M University-Kingsville President Dr. Robert H. Vela, Jr. will provide the keynote address.
Dr. Vela is the university’s 22nd President and began serving in that role on June, 15, 2022. His career has been dedicated to promoting access and opportunity to higher education across the state.
Previously, Dr. Vela served as President of San Antonio College, one of the largest community colleges in the nation, from 2014 to June 2022. Under his collaborative leadership, he developed a strategic plan that advanced the Alamo Community College District’s goal of transforming San Antonio College into the best community college in the United States. In 2021, the college earned the Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence, which is the nation’s premier recognition of achievement and performance among America’s community colleges.
Dr. Vela has also served in leadership roles at San Jacinto College and Coastal Bend College.
He launched his career in higher education at A&M-Kingsville in 1997, serving in various roles that included Upward Bound Program Coordinator and Director of the Teacher Development Center.
In 2021, Dr. Vela joined the Board of Directors of Excelencia in Education, an organization accelerating Latino student success in higher education to address the U.S. economy’s need for a highly educated workforce and civic leadership.
As a nationally recognized leader in higher education, Dr. Vela has also served as the President of the National Community College Hispanic Council and on the American Association of Community Colleges Board of Directors. Additionally, his credits include receiving the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Award in 2018.
Dr. Vela has taught courses in higher education administration and leadership, educational leadership and counseling throughout his 20 years in higher education.
A native of Alice, Texas, he earned bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees from A&M-Kingsville, and in 2015, Dr. Vela received the Javelina Distinguished Alumni Award.

The $569,417 in grant funding provided by Commit Partnership will be used to expand early college access, including partnering with Del Mar College. The four-year grant will help students access early college coursework, experience quality advising, and improve districtwide systems targeting higher levels of early college/dual enrollment coursework and increased enrollment in a post-secondary institution immediately upon graduation. - 6:41DMC invites public to explore and enjoy the new features, services at newly renovated White LibraryIn 2014, Del Mar College District voters approved a $157 million bond referendum to fund capital improvements on the Heritage and Windward campuses. Those project list included the William F. White, Jr. Library on the Heritage Campus. The White Library was originally built to support five floors and first opened in October 1967 with two floors. In 1979, the college added the third through fifth floors, finishing the top floor for use in 1998. The facility’s namesake served as a Del Mar College Regent for 33 years from 1951 until 1984. To celebrate the completion of the renovation project, the College held an Open House on April 10, 2025, to allow the general public an opportunity to view the transformation in person. Retired DMC librarian Alan Berecka read an original poem called “All Aboard” to close the public remarks portion of the event.
- 5:26Transportation Training Services: Transporting The Wall That Heals to LaredoOn April 1, 2025, Del Mar College’s Transportation Training Services (TTS) provided transportation for The Wall That Heals memorial replica exhibit to its next destination – Laredo. Del Mar College TTS instructors Mark Vela and Alvin Amador drove the exhibit from the College’s Windward Campus in Corpus Christi, Texas, to an organizing location where the Laredo Police Department and local Vietnam War veterans met up to lead the DMC team on a parade route through the streets of Laredo before delivering the exhibit to its display site.

- 4:37Texas Mutual Safety Grant Check Presentation to Del Mar CollegeOn Thursday, March 27, 2025, Texas Mutual presented its twelfth oversized check for $100,000 to DMC, bringing the company’s support for safety training in the Coastal Bend to a total of $1.2 million. The presentation was held in the Workforce Development Center on the Windward Campus. The college first initialized training through the Texas Mutual grant with a “Bus Safety First” Program that focused on drivers with Commercial Driver Licenses, or CDLs, by providing safety instruction to drive buses for either the city or area independent school districts. The College has expanded its safety training courses and programs over the years to cover areas ranging from healthcare to construction to radiation handling to food handling to maritime safety and more. Del Mar College has trained over 6,000 individuals, including industry partners’ employees and public participants, who have taken workplace safety courses through the Workforce Programs & Corporate Services or Continuing Education departments. Courses and programs have been partially supported by Texas Mutual Insurance Company’s Safety Grant for the past 11 years.
