Medical Support Squad on wheels for Del Mar College students
A new Medical Support Squad is helping make health care easier to access and more affordable for DMC students and staff.
The mobile medical services are available for Del Mar students and staff in a new partnership with South Texas Family Planning and Health Corporation. The Medical Support Squad is a medical clinic on wheels with a lab and two exam rooms and can provide many pharmacy, lab and health services to all three Del Mar campuses.
Patients have access to free and affordable services, screenings, and treatments including women’s health exams, breast and cervical cancer screenings, a full range of birth control options, and health screenings and treatments for diabetes, cholesterol, high blood pressure, respiratory infections, and sexually transmitted infections.
“We want to promote healthy living for the students, which will lead to getting their families and their kids into healthy living, promoting a healthy Nueces County overall,” stated Clinic Manager Sarah Villarreal.
The Medical Support Squad will be providing services on Fridays from 7:30 a.m.
to 12:30 p.m. at alternating campuses. Many services are free for students. Del Mar employees can also receive services, but should bring their insurance card. Appointments or pre-registration are available, but walk-ins are welcome.
“This school service clinic will empower students by providing convenient access to primary and preventative care. It will bridge the gap for students who may struggle with transportation or time restraints to go to a traditional clinic,” said Student Government Association President Sofia Jimenez at the clinic announcement on April 14 at the Heritage Campus. “Offering services such as screening and vaccinations will help students stay healthier and prevent potential health issues. The convenient access to healthcare will help reduce stress and anxiety, especially when it comes to financial burdens that come with seeking health services.”
“Overall, this on-campus mobile clinic will go a long way in making health care needs more accessible for our students and will positively impact their ability to be successful in their college journey,” Jimenez said.
“I think it’s really awesome, especially as college students,” said Del Mar student Arianna Vasquez. “We don’t get a lot of money, it’s hard to get around as a college student on a limited budget, so I think it’s really awesome that they have this mobile medical clinic for us.”
By bringing important services right to campus, the clinic is helping people stay healthy and focus on their goals. The mobile clinic is a big step toward making sure everyone has the support they need to succeed. For more information, contact STFPHC at 361-855-7333.
