Bring your friends and an open mind to Del Mar College this Saturday for the Social Forum. From public speakers to a trash fashion show, this event is a day-long opportunity to create bonds within the Coastal Bend community and to focus on environmental issues.
The Social Forum will take place Saturday, Nov. 8 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Retama Room on the second floor of the Harvin Center at Heritage Campus. Lunch will also be provided downstairs from noon to 1 p.m. for participants and attendees.
Texas Rising and For the Greater Good are hosting this event to bring together people from the Coastal Bend and to show everyone that we are all struggling with similar issues in our community and environment. These groups have invited numerous organizations and community leaders to shed light on environmentalism and the impact activists have on their communities.
Amid all the speeches will be the “Trashion Show: Creativity Meets Sustainability” where designers will be able to showcase their looks made from discarded, upcycled, and re-used materials. This show will be from 1-2 p.m., bringing attention to the need for a stronger support system towards environmental sustainability.
Texas Rising is a student club at DMC who aims to empower younger generations in the local area to become activists in their future. They collaborated with For the Greater Good, a local nonprofit organization, to highlight the need for environmental activism in our area to improve the cleanliness of our surroundings.
Vice President of Texas Rising, Aryeh Lebowitz, said that despite the vast number of organizations within the Coastal Bend, they tend to have “slight difference” in their ideology which ultimately divides the community. However, she hopes that this event will “bridge that gap” and focus on the main goal, “a greater good.”
