Local hardcore music scene came alive on Sept 29 known colloquially as, “Joe’s Backyard”, a non-traditional venue, home of Hardcore Demonstration Records owner, Jose Luis Valdovinos, Jr. with bands such as Bed of Nails, Turn Cold, No One Winz, Within Range and newcomers Mind Your Own.

Jose Luis Valdovinos Sr., the venue’s VP welcomed attendees with enthusiasm.

“I do anything and everything for my son,” Valdovinos said, highlighting his dedication to his son, the label, and its hardcore community.

Anyone who is familiar with the genre knows that the atmosphere comes with loud, aggressive music with a strong sense of community. Hardcore music is characterized by fast tempos, heavy guitar riffs, and intense vocals. This often includes elements of punk and metal with a sound that can be both cathartic and empowering.

Rumaldo Rosales, an attendee, shared his appreciation for the scene.

“I grew up listening to ska like my dad. It changed my life. This [scene] has a purpose. It’s the culture, the heart of it.”

Although the crowd can vary, it’s expected to see a mosh pit with some physicality. It’s usually all in good fun, but it’s essential to be aware of your surroundings and respect others’ space.

“You will get punched in the face in the pit,” said Rosales.

Although the shows can get a bit out of hand, Valdovinos, Jr. States a zero tolerance for aggressive behaviors.

“Yeah the mosh pit can get out of hand, it could happen at any venue. We have protocol here. No creeps, fighters, aggressors, no racism, homophobia or sexism. I just want people to have fun,” said Valdovinos, Jr.

Despite the challenges associated with hardcore shows, Valdovinos Sr. remains committed to fostering a welcoming atmosphere.

“Incidents do happen. We’ve had teeth knocked out and black eyes,” he admitted. “But people come to hardcore shows knowing this is part of the scene. It gets crazy.”
