Del Mar College (DMC) Baking/Pastry majors with the Culinary Arts & Hospitality Management Department, Mazzy Tagliaferro and Tina Walsh were selected to represent Corpus Christi this summer through the Sister City Culinary Exchange that’s overseen by the United Corpus Christi Chamber of Commerce.The two students experienced an immersive exchange in the city of Agen and throughout the surrounding area that builds on their current culinary skills.The nearly two-week exchange began with a June 1 arrival to and June 12 departure from Toulouse. The two DMC students were immersed in the gastronomy, culinary traditions and agricultural heritage of the Lot-et-Garonne region of southwest France where Agen is located.. The exchange combined hands-on kitchen training with leading chefs, visits to local producers, educational presentations and cultural experiences organized by the Agen Sister City Committee.

Del Mar College’s “other” STEM-focused summer camp, known as #Code_IT Camp, gives sixth through eighth graders -- with an emphasis on female youth -- the opportunity to spend some summertime learning the principles of computer science, programming and coding.The college offers the camp free to participants thanks to a $23,100 National Science Foundation (NSF) grant as part of their AI Program. The NSF’s program was developed as part of an overall goal to keep Texas and its workforce globally competitive in what is now a high-tech world.Dara Betz, DMC Coordinator of the college’s #Code_IT Camp and Workforce Programs Director with DMC Corporate Services, says, “When finished, campers will have spent a week learning about technology and staying engaged with hands-on activities that build on their problem-solving and analytical skills. The end-game is that they will see this summer camp as a building block toward their future, which in turn, is building upon the competitive sustainability of Texas’ economy.”Developed and conducted by DMC Computer Science faculty as a team-building experience, the #Code_IT Camp offers several levels of coding curriculum focused on spatial reasoning, computer programming, logic and design as well as text-based coding. Campers are exposed to computational thinking, and programming languages such as JavaScript and Python.The camp has been offered at DMC for the past eight years.
